First look: NASCAR's 2019 Cup Series formula intends to create tighter racing
It's not inherently pack racing, but NASCAR wants it to be awfully close


In the pursuit of closer racing and reversing an apparent decline of interest, NASCAR is set to completely change the racing product at the highest level of stock car racing next season.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will feature different horsepower targets, achieved through a tapered spacer, for different track types next season. Additionally, the cars will utilize bodies that feature larger spoilers, splitters and aero ducts, intended to increase downforce and achieve something that draws the cars closer together.

The baseline for this package comes from the All-Star Race held at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which created pack racing around the polarizing 1.5-mile intermediate track.

Most of these downforce ovals, defined as 1.2 miles or greater, will see a reduction of horsepower from 750 to 550 for the 2019 season. The tapered spacer, reduced-horsepower engines and high-downforce bodies will be in place for 17 of the 36 races next season, except the Daytona 500, which will be the only race contested with a traditional restrictor plate.

The other three races at Daytona and Talladega will also utilize tapered spacers.

Five other races will be run with the smaller tapered spacer but with no aero ducts -- both races at Pocono, Atlanta, Darlington and Homestead.

Here is the short version of the rules package delivered to teams on Monday:

Aero Elements

Spoiler: 8” x 61”

Splitter: 2” overhang, 10.5” wings at ends of splitter

Radiator pan: 37” in front tapered to 31” with vertical fences

Aero ducts: Used at majority of oval tracks larger than 1 mile

Engine Elements

750 hp: 1.17” tapered spacer (Used at short tracks and road courses)

550 hp: 0.922” tapered spacer (Used at oval tracks larger than 1 mile)

Misc.

Enhanced vehicle chassis mandatory at all tracks.

Adding three long block engine seals in points races. These are in addition to the 13 short block seals introduced this season.

25 percent reduction in testing (three organizational tests, down from four; three teams at each Goodyear test, down from four)

The changes come after a four-year policy of NASCAR targeting a reduction of downforce to increase a stated desire to see the drivers themselves mean more. Now, it seems as if NASCAR is targeting something that more closely resembles the product seen at Daytona and Talladega, even if the league’s vice president of competition, Steve O’Donnell doesn’t view it that way.

"Let me dispel the myth that NASCAR is interested in pack racing everywhere ... that's not at all where we're trying to get to," he said.

Additionally, NASCAR has targeted the 550-hp range because that is what manufacturers have told them they need to be at in order to be showroom relevant to keep their future participation.

"I think if you look at our current partners, it’s important to speak with them first and I think they’re very happy with where we are in the sport, but we always want to grow," O’Donnell said. "And when we talk about growth, that means being more relevant, potentially introducing more technology into the sport, especially around the engine. As we’ve had discussions with new OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), the direction we’re going in for next year’s rules package really opens up a variety of options for us to bring in new OEMs, to have our current OEMs potentially accept a new direction.

"So, a lot of thought went into this that this isn’t just a 2019 rules package, it’s something that we believe really sets us up for the future -- not only for our current partners, but growing the sport, which hopefully leads to more healthy ownership as well where we can bring some new OEMs in."

Talk of this direction has proven to be polarizing in both the garage and on social media, with many believing this package diminishes driver talent and increases the focus on engineering.

The response is that pack racing requires a different kind of talent and that whatever kind of racing this produces, it will feature its own skill set, too. O’Donnell says drivers will now have more options to make passes with cars closer together.

"The best drivers and the best teams are still going to win the races," he said. "Do we think the guys will be closer together? We do."

Prvi put od 1987. godine i stravicnog sudara Bobby Allisona nema restriction plates na superspeedways.

Bice samo na Dejtoni 500. Na ostale 3 snaga motora ce biti smanjena na 550 hp.

Tale sta je tapered spacer?

NASCAR drivers pushed for 2019 driver-aid ban

NASCAR will ban a key driver aid for the 2019 Cup series season by removing the driver-adjustable track bar that allows competitors to adjust chassis set-up on track.

The device was introduced for the 2015 Cup season so that drivers could influence the handling during the changing conditions of a race.

NASCAR claims drivers had approached the series over a desire to lose the driver-adjustable track bar.

"We’ve had the driver-adjustable trackbar for quite a while now and many of them [the drivers] came to us and said, ‘Hey, look. This really didn’t do what we’d hoped for and we’d rather not have it,’" Scott Miller, NASCAR's senior vice president of competition, told SiriusXM Radio.

“So part of the 2019 rules is that the driver-adjustable, cockpit-adjustable trackbar is no longer in play for 2019.”

The implication of the change means that pitstop set-up changes will become more crucial.

Previously a NASCAR team could make a wedge adjustment, which relates to suspension set-up, and any mistakes could be countered by driver adjustment on track.

Now that safety net has been removed, a year after NASCAR reduced the number of over-the-wall pit crew, means any set-up mistakes would have to be fixed at the next pitstop.

Kad ce Cip Ganasi saopstiti drugog vozaca i SHR cetvrtog?

Kakav je ovaj Hemrik sto dolazi kod Cildresa, koji su njegovi uspesi?

Kurt Busch je siguran za Ganassi, to je ranije i sam Stewart-Haas izjavio.

A sto se tice Stewart-Haas, poprilicno sam siguran da ce Daniel Suarez popuniti tu poziciju, verovatno jos samo pregovaraju oko sponzora.

Malo mi je bilo cudno sto je Childress promovisao Hemrica tako rano - on ipak nikada nije pobedio ni u Truck ni u Xfiniti seriji.
Meni licno je poznat jer je proveo godinu dana u Truck seriji vozeci Forda za Brad Keselowski Racing.

Dve velike Fordove nade ...

Chase Briscoe - 23 godine, prosle sezone je proveo izmedju Rousha i Stewart-Haasa u Xfiniti seriji, pre toga vozio u Truck seriji za Brad Keselowski Racing.

Austin Cindric - 20 godina, prosle sezone je proveo izmedju 2 Fordova tima u Xfiniti seriji (Roush i Penske), pre toga isto vozio Ford u Truck seriji za Brad Keselowski Racing. Sledece sezone ce voziti punu sezonu za Penske u Xfiniti.

Ryan Reed napusta Ford. Dosao je kao velika nada pre 5 godina vozeci za Roush u Xfiniti seriji, uspeo da pobedi 2 Daytone, ali nikada nije bio bolje plasiran od 6. mesta. U 2016. sezoni je vozio i 1 trku u Sprint seriji (zavrsio kao 26. na Talladegi), plan je verovatno bio vremenom ga ubaciti punu sezonu, ali losi rezultati su verovatno razlog zasto je izgubio sponzora i posao.

Nekadasnji Fordov vozac Rick Crawford dobio 130 meseci zatvora jer je preko internet pokusao da plati za seks sa 12-godisnjom klinkom.

Vozio je za Ford u Truck seriji od 1997. do 2010. za Circle Bar Racing. 5 pobeda, najbolje mesto u generalnom plasmanu 2. (2002.).

Rick Ware Racing najavio da ce sledece sezone imati 2 puna tima. U 2018. sezoni su imali samo 1 i koristili su Ford (11 trka), Chevrolet (23) i Toyotu (2), zavisno od trke i vozaca. U 2019. sezoni bi trebali koristiti samo Ford.

Imali su fantastican retro stil na Darlingtonu.

Jos jedan Fordov tim je objavio planove za 2019. To je niskobudzetni Front Row Motorsport koji ce imati 3 auta sledece sezone (do sada 2).
Michael McDowell i David Ragan ce nastaviti da voze #34 i #38 dok je Matt Tifft novi vozac u #36 timu. Tifft je prosle sezone vozio u Xfiniti seriji gde je zavrsio kao 6. Ovo je prvi put da tim koristi #36, a pored #34 i #38 prethodnih godina su koristili i #35 i #37. Takodje poseduju pravo i na #23.

Kurt Busch potvrdio da nece voziti za Stewart Haas sledece sezone. Ovo se nagadjalo i ranije, a sad je i zvanicno.

Veliki gubitak za Ford za koga je vozio nekoliko puta. Prvo za Roush u Truck seriji u 2001. sezoni gde je kao rookie pobedio 4 trke i zavrsio kao 2. u generalnom plasmanu. Onda je vozio za Roush u Cup seriji od 2002.-2005. - 13 pobeda i sampionska titula u 2004. sezoni.

Za Stewart-Haas je vozio od 2015., ali Ford samo zadnje 2 sezone (pre toga Stewart Haas je koristio Chevrolet). 2 pobede, ukljucujuci proslogodisnju Daytonu 500.

Najverovatnije prelazi u Chip Ganassi Racing gde ce sledece sezone voziti #1 Chevrolet. Nepoznato ko ce ga zameniti, ali se nagadja Daniel Suarez.

Niskobudzetni Fordov tim Go Fas Racing je dobio novog vozaca za 2019. To je Corey LaJoie. Njegov cale Randy je bio izuzetno popularan vozac u slabijoj Busch/Nationwide/Xfiniti seriji tokom 1990ih (osvojio 2 titule) dok se Corey uglavnom seljakao i nije imao zapazene rezultate. Prosle sezone je vozio delimicnu sezonu, najbolji plasman mu je bio 16. u Las Vegasu. Ostao je upamcen po izjavi iz 2017. godine kada se kvalifikovao na Daytonu 500 tako sto je slupao Reed Sorensona, tada je rekao "da bi slupao i svoju mamu da se kvalifikuje za Daytonu".

Zadnje 2 sezone Matt DiBenedetto je vozio u timu i bio je solidan s obzirom da koristi automobile stare nekoliko godina. Ne ocekujem da ce LaJoie biti bolje plasiran od 30. mesta.

Ove sezone retro na Darlingtonu ce biti na osnovu 1990-1994 modela. Jedva cekam da vidim, moja omiljena trka u sezoni.

Pre nekoliko dana je preminuo Glen Wood. Ima je 93 godine. Jedno od najvecih imena u istoriji Fordovog NASCAR programa.

On i njegov brat Len su osnovali Wood Brothers Racing 1950. godine i trenutno je najstariji aktivni tim u NASCAR-u. Imaju 99 pobeda. Nikada nisu osvojili titulu, ali sve do sredine 1980-ih godina nisu vozili punu sezonu vec su se kocentrisali samo na najvece trke. Poznati su sto od prvog dana saradjuju sa Fordom. Tokom kasnih 1960-ih i tokom 1970-ih su koristili Mercury, ostatak vremena Ford. Uvek su koristili #21 osim kratkog perioda tokom sredine 1980-ih kada je Kyle Petty koristio #7 (zbog 7-11 sponzora).

Ali iznenadili me Seviji na kvalama prva 4 sva Hendrika. Ali pitanje je dal to mogu preneti u trku sta ti kazes Tale?

Pol pozicija na superspeedways ne znaci mnogo, cak je i Danica bila na pol poziciju za Daytonu 500. Chevy ce biti bolji nego prosle sezone (tesko da moze biti gori), ali ne verujem da ce biti bolji od Forda i Toyote.

U 1. Harvick, Stenhouse, Menard.
