Znaci nece biti jedna od onih biografija napisana na osnovu dostupnih informacija na internetu, vec je Martin licno ispricao.

Ranije sam slusao jedan njegov podcast na Spotify gde je imao posebnu epizodu za svaku sezonu u karijeri, bilo je dosta zanimljivo. Pricao je izmedju ostalog kako mu je Jack Roush dao sansu kada niko drugi nije hteo, kako veruje da je izgubio nekoliko titula jer Jack Roush nije hteo da potrosi novac na bolji pit tim, zatim odluka da vozi samo delimicnu sezonu, pa da se opet vrati trkanju za punu sezonu kada mu je Hendrick dao ponudu, itd. Mislim da je bilo 15-ak epizoda ili tako nesto.

Where is the stock in stock cars?
What happened to homologation? We need some strong rules demanding that bodies and engines combinations be required to be able to buy on Monday. Sure it may be a sedan, but make it a 3.6 liter V6 since that’s what they actually have.
NASCAR has lost its way, we need to bring the stock back in stock car racing.

NASCAR hasn’t been meaningfully “stock” in the showroom sense since like the late 1960s. The idea that there was some golden era where you could just walk into a dealership and buy Richard Petty’s exact race car is romantic revisionism. Even in the supposed homologation heyday, teams were building purpose-built race cars that only vaguely resembled production models.

If you want to talk about true homologation, you’re really thinking more along the lines of something like the old Group A era in touring cars or modern GT3 racing - not NASCAR. And even those categories involve heavy modification. NASCAR evolved into a silhouette formula decades ago because it’s safer, more cost-controlled, and far more competitive.

Clash: It seems that in NASCAR today, there are no more colorful drivers for fans to root for, like when it was say, you and Cale Yarbrough. Is this hurting the series?

Petty: When Cup races started in 1949, the fans who came were Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler people. There really weren't any big driver names. But then you had Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson and those guys who carried the thing for say, 10 years. Then the Pearson's, the Allison's, the Baker's, the Yarborough's and the Petty's came along. After that was the Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson period.

Right now, we're really hurting, looking for somebody to break out of the crowd. We have no fox for all of the dogs to chase. It's a multitude of drivers racing against each other with no front-runner, nobody dominant, the first time in all of the transitions to different eras we have had this.

Clash: Right before this interview, someone told me that you still have your number listed in the phone book. True?

Petty: Yes. But I've got a little deal that shows who's calling. If you're not on my list, I don't take the call. All of my family and some of the people I work with now - I know their numbers. But if you call, I wouldn't answer [laughs].
